The Straits Times named Narendra Modi as the Asian of the Year 2014

On 5th December 2014, Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi was named as the Asian of the Year 2014 by Singapore's leading newspaper The Straits Times. He was named as the Asian of the Year 2014 for being a development-focused leader.

First Adaptation Gap Report released by UNEP

On 5th December 2014, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released its first Adaptation Gap Report during a crucial round of climate talks in Lima, Peru.
This report serves as a preliminary assessment of global adaptation gaps in finance, technology and knowledge which lays out a framework for future work on bridging these gaps.
This report also says that even if global greenhouse gas emissions are cut to the level required to keep global temperature rise below 2°C this century, still the cost of climate change adaptation in developing countries is likely to reach two to three times the previous estimates of 70-100 billion US dollars per year by 2050.

Arun Duggal appointed as non-executive Chairman of Credit rating agency ICRA

On 5th December 2014, Mr. Arun Duggal was appointed as non-executive Chairman of Credit Rating Agency ICRA Limited. He was elected unilaterally by the ICRA Board. Earlier he was serving as an independent director on the Board of ICRA Ltd.
He will be succeeding Pranab Kumar Choudhury.
Mr. Arun Duggal is the former Chairman of the non-banking financial company Shriram Capital Ltd.

For the post of next defense secretary of US, physicist Ashton Carter nominated

On 5th December 2014, Physicist and Former Harvard professor Ashton Carter was nominated as the next defence secretary of US Department of Defence by President Barack Obama.
He will be replacing Chuck Hagel as US Defence Secretary, who resigned in November 2014. He is supposed to take over the charge in 2015 and will be fourth defence secretary of President Obama in six years. He had been a longtime member of the Defense Science Board and the Defense Policy Board, the principal advisory bodies to the Secretary of Defense of US.

First World Soil Day observed on 5th December

On 5th December 2014, First World Soil Day was observed by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and UNFAO along with Global Soil Parternership (GSP) declared the year of 2015 as UN International Year of Soils on the eve of first World Soil day. 
King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej and the FAO Global Soil Partnership (GSP) requested United Nations to approve the date of World Soil Day to raise awareness about the soil and usage of soil. 
Important to mention here that this day coincides on the birthday of King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej.

ICC cricket World Cup 2015 got MRF as global partner

ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 got its global partner as MRF Ltd of India. This was announced by International Cricket Council (ICC) on 1 December 2014 when the unveiling of the ICC Cricket World Cup Trophy took place.

Second successive Macau Open title clinched by Ace Indian shuttler PV Sindhu

On 30th November 2014, Noted Indian Shuttler P V Sindhu clinched Macau Grand Prix Gold trophy for second successive year. USD 120,000 Macau Grand Prix Gold trophy was bagged by P V Sindhu after defeating Kim Hyo Min of Korea in the women's singles finals.
Two-time World Championship bronze medallist P V Sindhu have rank World No. 11. P V Sindhu defeated Kim by 21-12 21-17 in match of 45 minutes at the Tap Seac Multisport Pavilion. 

40 Indian prisoners released by Pakistan

On 28th November 2014, 40 Indian prisoners were released by Pakistan and today they were repatriated by Pakistan government through Attari-Wagah route. 
Out of 40 prisoners, 35 were fishermen who inadvertently went into Pakistani waters through Arabian Sea while fishing and later they were held by the Pakistani coast guards for illegal fishing and other five were arrested in Pakistan as their travel documents were not complete.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first train from Meghalaya

On 29th November 2014, First passenger train from Meghalaya was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This train is scheduled to run between Mendipathar to Guwahati.
Apart from this PM Modi also laid the foundation stone of a board gauge railway line from Bhairabi to Sairang in Mizoram.

Boxer Manoj Kumar conferred with Arjuna Award

On 26th November 2014, Boxer Manoj Kumar was honoured with prestigious Arjuna Award. Manoj Kumar received this award from Union Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at a function in New Delhi.
It is important to mention here that Manoj Kumar was denied the award by the Kapil Dev-led selection committee then after he took legal route and won the case in Delhi High Court.

IIMA and World Gold Council set up India Gold Policy Centre

On 26th November 2014,  World Gold Council (WGC) and Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA) collaborated to set up India Gold Policy Centre. This is aimed to conduct research on all aspects of the domestic gold industry.
This centre will be developing insights into how the significant stocks of gold India owns can be used to advance growth, employment, social inclusion and economic wealth of the nation.

President Pranab Mukherjee penned a book titled The Dramatic Decade

New book which is titled as "The Dramatic Decade: The Indira Gandhi Years" is penned by President of India Pranab Mukherjee. This book is set to be released on 11th December 2014. 
It is news obviously because it is penned by the President, it is also important to mention that it is first of a three part volume. Second volume will be on the years 1981-88 and third will be from 1988 to 2012.
First volume which will be throwing light into the era of 1970's which belonged to the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and have seen a major political and economic evolution in India.

Pakistani actress Veena Malik sentenced to 26 years in jail for blasphemy

On 26th November 2014, Pakistani actress Veena Malik, owner of Geo TV and Jang group Asad Bashir Khan and TV host Shaista Wahidi were sentenced to 26 years in jail by an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) of the Gilgit region of Pakistan for blasphemy for appearing in mock Geo TV wedding scene in which religious song about the wedding of the Prophet Muhammad's daughter was played in background.

Shariah Equity Fund to be launched by SBI Mutual Fund

 State Bank of India (SBI) Mutual Fund (MF) announced on 26 November 2014 that it will launch Shariah Equity Fund on 1 December 2014. The fund is aimed at attracting investments from Muslim populations of India.  
The fund has been approved by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, an authority that oversees the observance of Muslim civil laws in India.
With this, SBI MF will become the fourth fund house in India to have an Islamic equity fund after Goldman Sachs MF, Taurus MF and Tata MF.
Also, India became the second country outside the Islamic world where a state-owned bank is offering a Shariah-compliant fund. The UK is the first country who issued sovereign Islamic bonds in June 2014.

Namsai became the 18th district of Arunachal Pradesh

On 25th November 2014, Arunachal Pradesh got a new district Namsai. Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Nabam Tuki declared Namsai as 18th district of Arunachal Pradesh.

Australian batsman Phillip Hughes died after head injury by bouncer

On 27th November 2014, There was a sad news in Cricket world as a young Australia batsman Phillip Hughes passed away at the age of 25. Two days before he was struck on the top of the neck by a bouncer.

PM Narendra Modi flags off Kathmandu-Delhi bus service

On 25th November 2014, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala flagged off the Kathmandu-Delhi bus service from Kathmandu. This service was named as Pashupatinath Express.
This service is aimed to boost the bilateral ties between the two neighbouring countries and also expected to give a major boost to trade and tourism.
Route of the bus will be from Kathmandu to Bhairawa to Sanauli to Gorakhpur to Lucknow to New Delhi.

Legendary Kathak danseuse Sitara Devi died at 94

On 25th November 2014 Legendary Kathak danseuse Sitara Devi passed away in Mumbai. She was 94 years old. 
Sitara Devi was a gem of Indian dance and was honoured with many prestigious awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Padma Shri and Kalidas Samman. When she was just 16 years old then after watching her performance Rabindranath Tagore described her as Nritya Samragini. Apart from performing at various national and international platforms she also gave her performances in various hindi movies like Usha Haran, Nagina, Roti, Vatan, Anjali, Mother India etc.

Former SC judge CK Prasad to succeed Justice Markendey Katju as PCI chief

On 24th November 2014, Former judge of Supreme Court Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad was selected as next chairperson of the Press Council of India (PCI) by a committee headed by Vice-President Hamid Ansari.
He will be succeeding Justice Markenday Katju
Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad was appointed as Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on 20 March 2009 and then took oath as Judge of Supreme Court of India in February 2010.

Shah Rukh Khan signed as brand ambassador by DHFL

On 20th November 2014, Second largest housing finance company of India, DHFL announced the name of noted bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan as its brand ambassador. Shah Rukh Khan became first ever brand ambassador of DHFL. 
Rajesh Kumar Wadhawan founded DHFL in year 1984 and current Chairman and Managing Director of DHFL is Kapil Wadhawan.

Lahore based author Bilal Tanweer won Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize 2014

Bilal Tanweer bagged the 2014 Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize. He got this award for his novel The Scatter Here Is Too Great. Lahore based author Bilal Tanweer was honoured with a trophy and 2 lakh rupees.

Chuck Hagel resigned as US defence secretary

 US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel resigned from his post. He started to serve at this post from Feb 2013, though he will stay on as secretary until his successor is confirmed. 
Chuck Hagel was the 24th United States Secretary of defence and he served as United States Senator from Nebraska between 1997 and 2009.

At Track Asia Cup 2014, Indian cyclist Deborah clinched four gold medals

 Indian Cyclist Deborah clinched four gold medals at the Track Asia Cup Cycling Championship 2014 which was held from 21st to 23rd November 2014 at Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi.
Overall India finished with medal tally of total 18 medals which includes 5 Golds, 4 Silvers and 9 Bronzes.

Adani Power buys Avantha Group's 600 MW Korba West plant for Rs 4200 crore

On 24th November 2014, Adani Power signed a binding agreement with Gautam Thapar-led Avantha Group to buy its Korba West Power Co Ltd (KWPCL) 600 MW unit at 4200 crore rupees. This unit is located at Korba in Chhattisgarh. After this deal Adani Power became the largest private sector power utility in India with an installed capacity of 11040 MW.

US President Barack Obama will be chief guest of India's Republic Day 2015

On 21st November 2014, US President Barack Obama accepted the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being the Chief Guest at 66th India's Republic Day celebrations 2015.
Obama will be a part of Republic Day celebrations of India in New Delhi on 26th January 2015, thus he will become first US President to attend the Republic Day Parade of India. Last time Barack Obama visited India in 2010 on the invitation of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Col CK Nayudu Lifetime achievement award received by Dilip Vengsarkar

On 21st November 2014, Former Indian cricket captain Dilip Vengsarkar was honoured with Colonel C K Nayudu Lifetime achievement award. This award is instituted by BCCI. He was conferred with the prestigious award for this contribution to Indian Cricket. He received cheque of Rs 25 Lakh among a citation and trophy.
Indian medium-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar also received  Polly Umrigar award and a cheque of Rs 5 lakh. A special award was conferred to Rohit Sharma for a world record of 264 runs in the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka in the recent series.

India clinches 3rd SAFF Women's Championship in Islamabad

On 21st November 2014, Indian team won South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women's Championship at the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad. Indian team defeated Nepal in the final by one sided match by the score of 6-0.
From Indian Side Ngangom Bala Devi was the star of the game as she helped the team by scoring 4 goals. 
Captain of Indian Team was Oinam Bembem Devi and Captain of Nepal team was Anu Lama.

SAARC committee decided to dissolve three regional centres

On 22nd November 2014, SAARC committee decided to dissolve three regional centres and merge four others to end the duplication of work and also to reduce its budget.
This decision was took at the 49th meeting of the joint secretaries of the SAARC countries.

Hero of 71 INS Vikrant is a history now

INS Vikrant which was once a hero of Indian Navy has finally faded away into history as on 21st November 2014 dismantling of this majestic vessel began. As earlier The Bombay High Court had given the go-ahead for Vikrant to be auctioned in January, after it rejected a public interest litigation petition to save the vessel and convert it into a maritime museum and Centre also said that it is difficult to maintain it. Indian Navy in March sold out Vikrant to Mumbai based ship breaking company for Rs. 63 Crore.

Best Project Award of India bagged by Arunachal Pradesh

Among the national current affairs, India's Best Project-2014 award for implementation of skill development and employment generation was bagged by Arunachal Pradesh . As this programme was aimed at benefit of youth, mostly less-educated and school drop-outs.
Gurgaon-based Skoch Group has instituted this award. Gunjan Sarma got first state bravery award by Assam government

On 17th November 2014, Assam government honoured Gunjan Sarma with very first state bravery award in Guwahati. 
Brave girl of Assam Gunjan Sarma was given this award for her courage to save lives of 10 school children who were taken hostage by a gunman. She volunteered to be taken hostage by a gunman to save other lives but later she was abandoned in a dense forest along Assam-Nagaland border at night, from there she managed to find her way back. Assam government instituted state bravery award after being impressed by her saga of bravery.

Pandit Jasraj honoured with Sumitra Charat Ram Award 2014

On 17th November 2014, Noted classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj was conferred with the Sumitra Charat Ram Award 2014 for Lifetime Achievement. This is very prestigious award, in past Pt Birju Maharaj, Kishori Amonkar and Mayadhar Raut were also recipient of same.

Five pacts signed between India and Australia and agreed on early closure of Civil Nuclear Deal

On 18th November 2014, India and Australia signed five pacts on social security, transfer of sentenced prisoners, combating narcotics trade, tourism and Arts & Culture.
These pacts were signed to boost bilateral relationship of two countries.
Apart from these pacts, India and Australia agreed on early closure of the civil nuclear agreement which will give Australia a chance to participate in one of the most secure and safe nuclear energy programme in the world. 
Uranium trade will be facilitated between the two countries by concluding the civil nuclear pact.
Asutralia has about 40 percent of total world's uranium reserves and it exports approx 7000 tonnes of uranium annually.

Kisan Vikas Patra scheme restarted by Union Government

On 18th November 2014, Indian Government relaunched Kisan Vikas Patra scheme to encourage the small savings among the citizens. After the relaunch this scheme will be available across the country through designated branches of nationalized banks.
maturity period of Kisan Vikas Patra is 8 years 4 months.

Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) which is a certificate savings scheme was launched by the Union Government on 1st April 1988. Under this scheme a person can do unlimited investment by way of purchase of certificates from post offices in various denominations. 

Nepal hosted International Buddhist Conference 2014

Four day long International Buddhist Conference 2014 was held in Lumbini, Nepal with an aim of preserving Buddhist culture and heritage. This was attended by more than 400 Buddhist experts and intellectuals.

Akash missile test fired successfully in Odisha

On 17th November 2014, Indian Air Force successfully test fired surface-to-air missile Akash from Chandipur, Odisha. It was a part of user trail by Air Force
It is a medium range surface-to-air anti-aircraft defence system with a strike range of 25 km and can carry a warhead of 60 kg. It is designed in such a way that it can track and attack several targets simultaneously.

2014 Global Terrorism Index

On 18th November 2014, Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) released Global Terrorism Index 2014 in which ranks of 162 countries are provided with fact based understanding of terrorism and its impact.
As per report terrorism has become a global phenomenon. There is increase of 61 percent if we talk about the number of people killed in terrorist attacks in 2013 as compared to 2012.
82 percent of all terrorism occurred in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria and Syria.

Dhanush ballistic missile successfully test-fired by India

On 14th November 2014, India successfully test fired Surface to-Surface nuclear capable Dhanush ballistic missile from a ship in the Bay of Bengal by SFC (Strategic Force Command) of defence force.
Nuclear capable Dhanush ballistic missile is naval variant of India's indigenously-developed Prithvi missile.

G4 candidature for permanent member of UNSC supported by UK, France, Nepal

On 13th November 2014, Three countries namely UK, France and Nepal supported candidature of G4 nations for the permanent member of a reformed UN Security Council (UNSC). Apart from this it was also sought African representation and expansion of the non-permanent seats by these countries.

Noted actor Farhan Akhtar named as UN Women's Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia

On 14th November 2014, Famous Bollywood Actor Farhan Akhtar was appointed as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia, by this he became first ever male to be chosen as a Goodwill Ambassador in the organization's history.
He will be working towards empowerment of women and girls and will be serving as an advocate for UN Women's newly launched HeForShe initiative.

Rosetta mission lands Philae spacecraft on Comet 67P

On 12th November 2014, ESA (European Space Agency) Rosetta mission landed its Philae probe on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The landing site on the comet was named as Agilkia.
It is important to mention here that it is the first kind of mission in which probe landed on a comet.
Philae is the name of Island in the Nile after which lander has been named and Landing site has been named as Agilkia in honour of Agilkia Island, which was chosen by ESA public contest.

Bal Swachhta Mission launched by Union Government across the country

On 14th November 2014 to mark the Children's Day Union Government launched National Bal Swachhta Mission across the Country. Bal Swachhta Mission was launched by Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Smriti Irani at National Bal Bhavan, New Delhi. 
National Bal Swachhta Mission will be having following six themes :

Ratan Tata inducted on board of the INTERPOL Foundation

On 14th November 2014, Renowned and Respected Business Tycoon of India Ratan Tata was inducted on the board of INTERPOL Foundation to contribute to two new global initiatives aimed at combating organised crime and terrorist activities by the foundation. 
These initiatives aimed at protecting cultural property and modernising channels of international judicial cooperation. This board is headed by Prince Albert II of Monaco and former Lebanese Deputy Prime Minister Elias Murr
INTERPOL is an international police organization which is world's largest police organization with total 190 countries which co-ordinate and works around the world to make it safer. 

Remote sensing satellite Yaogan-23 launched by China

On 15th November 2014, China launched remote sensing satellite Yaogan-23 from Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre which was carried by a Long March-2c rocket. 
This satellite will be mainly for scientific experiments, natural resource surveys, crop yield estimates and disaster relief. 
China has big plans for the space now as China planned to launch about 70 remote sensing satellites to detect the near-Earth space environment, 20 communication satellites and will also launch 30 navigation satellites to provide accurate global positioning and navigation services.

Sanskrit will be replacing German as third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas

Kendriya Vidyalaya has decided to discontinue German as third language. Sanskrit will be taking the place of Germany. As per HRD Minister Smriti Irani this decision has been taken in the national interest.
This decision will be affecting more than 70000 students acorss the 500 Kendriya Vidyalaya's acorss the country. Earlier German was an option to Sanskrit.
It is also important to mention here that earlier Sanskrit teachers approached Delhi High Court alleging that KVS had introduced German as a third language in place of Sanskrit against the education policy.

Saina Nehwal, Kidambi Srikanth clinched China Open Titles 2014

On 16th November 2014, Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth won prestigious China Open Super Series in men and women formats respectively.

Saina Nehwal defeated Japan's Akane Yamaguchi by 21-12, 22-20 in her sixth appearance at the China Open and this was her 3rd title in this year. She also shared her happiness by tweeting it as :
 So happy to win my 3rd title this year. Great feeling to win the China Open. One of the toughest tournaments.

Kidambi Srikanth won men's single after defeating two time Olympic champion Lin Dan by 21-19,  21-17. This was the biggest victory of Kidambi Srikanth so far.

Doordarshan will be rebranding itself with new tagline Desh Ka Apna Channel

In a bid to increase its viewer base DD National is all set to relaunch channel as new tagline "Desh Ka Apna Channel". It will also be adding new programmes and will be having new colours incorporated in it. This is all set to launch from 17th November 2014.
In a released statement it was said that the channel will focus on themes like traditional family values, nation before self and trustworthiness.
