GDP grows 7.4% in Q2, mfg up 9.3%
The economy grew by 7.4% during JulySeptember on the back of higher activity in manufacturing as well as most services sectors. The expansion was quicker than the 7% rise during April-June 2015, but slower than the 8.4% growth registered during the second quarter of the last fiscal.Central Statistics Office data showed a big boost from manufacturing, seen to be critical for a rise in jobs. Compared to an expansion of 7.2% in the first quarter, the sector is estimated to have grown by 9.3% during the September quarter, the fastest pace since July-September 2012.

Bihar Government bans sale of liquor from 1st April 2016

Bihar Government has banned sale of liquor in the state from 1st April 2016. This decision would make Bihar 6th dry state/UT in the country. It was announced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on the occasion of liquor prohibition day. This decision was taken in lines pledge made Mr. Kumar during the 2015 assembly elections to ban liquor if voted to power again. To implement the ban state government officials of the excise department are working on new liquor policy as ruling government does not want a parallel alcohol economy in the state. Presently, liquor consumption is prohibited in the states of Gujarat (1958), Nagaland (1989), Manipur (1991) and Kerala (2014) and Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

Scientists have designed a new synthetic material that can fuse two surfaces underwater. The material combines the key functionalities of interfacial mussel foot proteins, creating a single, low-molecular-weight, onecomponent adhesive. The material was made inspired by mussels' ability to cling to surfaces despite the pounding of waves and wind. The adhesive can be used for basic repair of materials regularly exposed to salty water, to biomedical and dental uses, as well as nanofabrication.

2019 new deadline for completion of PMGSY

Union Government has reduced the deadline for completion of flagship Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) for rural connectivity through all- weather roads from 2022 to 2019. The annual allocation of the Central release for PMGSY works during year 2015-16 also has been increased by 5,000 crore rupees. With this, the total Central allocation to states under PMGSY would now be 15,100 crore rupees.

Delhi assembly passes CrPC (Delhi Amendment) Bill, 2015

Delhi Assembly has passed the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) (Delhi Amendment) Bill, 2015. The bill amends section 176(1) of the CrPC Act, 1973 and widens the scope of magisterial inquiry into cases of suspicious death, rapes in police custody and suspicious disappearances. Thus, it empowers Delhi government to initiate a magisterial inquiry to cover any other cases in police custody and suspicious death. However, the passage of is consider as another Centre-state flashpoint because Opposition has argued that it challenges the authority of Parliament as Delhi Assembly is empowering itself by passing the bill. The Ruling Delhi Government has mentioned that CrPC Act, 1976 enacted by Parliament is a subject in the Concurrent list (having 52 items) in the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution of India and having power to amend it.

Telangana Government declared 231 mandals as drought-hit

Following scanty rainfall in 2016, Telangana Government on 24 November 2015 declared 231 mandals as drought-hit. 

The state government has submitted the list of drought-prone mandals and urged it to provide an immediate assistance of 1000 crore rupees to mitigate the situation. It also urged the Union government to send a Central team to assess drought conditions in the state.

The Maharashtra government on 24 November 2015 decided to launch Gopinath Munde Farmers Accident Insurance Scheme 2015-16. The scheme will cover accidental death of handicap of the farmers.
The insurance scheme is aimed at ensuring social and economic security to farmers and their families. 

The scheme is likely to benefit 1.37 crore farmers in the 10-75 year age group whose names are registered in the land records.

Govt open to `tweaking' GST to get it passed

The Centre is reaching out to opposition parties on the goods and services tax (GST) as it seeks to ensure passage of the Constitution amendment bill during the winter session of Parliament which starts from Thursday .It is not averse to incorporating some of the changes proposed by Congress in order to enlist the party's support in Rajya Sabha, which is essential to get the reforms legislation passed.The Centre reportedly plans to take up the matter directly with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi.It has also reached out to SP, Trinamool Congress, AIADMK and TRS, which are sympathetic to the need for early passage of the crucial legislation.

In what opens a fresh flashpoint with the Centre, the ruling AAP MLAs in the Delhi assembly passed amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), giving the state powers to widen the scope of magisterial inquiry and not bank solely on reports by investigating officers of the police in matters where it feels a deeper probe is required.

The BJP-ruled South Delhi Municipal Corporation launched an online system for trade and storage licence on Monday under “Ease of doing business“ along the lines of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Digital India initiative. The online system aims to reduce the level of corruption within their departments and abolition of “inspector raj“, along with easing off the pressure on traders by providing a user-friendly interface.“The traders are happy,“ said Ramesh Khanna, president of All India Traders As sociation of Delhi.

7 killed in chopper crash at Vaishno Devi

Six pilgrims and a woman pilot were killed on Monday when a helicopter carrying them from the Vaishno Devi base camp at Katra to the temple, barely 50 km away, crashed minutes after it took off. The pilgrims included a Jammu IAF officer and his wife who had tied the knot last Wednesday, and a six-year-old girl from Delhi accompanied by her father.The helicopter belonged to private company Himalayan Heli Services. Along with another private operator Global Vectra, the two services carry out 100-odd sorties per day during this month of pilgrim traffic between Katra and Sanjhichatt, near the cave shrine, a journey that is 7 to 8 minutes long.

UNSC unanimously resolution adopts to prevent further IS other terrorist groups attacks

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted a Resolution 2249 (2015), calling on all nations to re-double and co-ordinate action to prevent further attacks by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other extremist groups. The resolution has been not drafted under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter which empowers UN to give a green signal to the use of force.

7th Central Pay Commission submits report, proposes 23.55% salary hike

7th Central Pay Commission (CPC) headed by Justice AK Mathur has recommended 23.55 percent hike in pay and allowances of government employees. In this regard the commission has submitted its report to Union Finance Ministry in New Delhi and the recommended pay revision will come into effect from 1 January 2016.

CCEA approves production subsidy of Rs 4.50/quintal to Sugarcane farmers

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has decided to pay a production-linked subsidy of Rs 4.50 per quintal directly to sugarcane farmers in the current crushing season. Decision in this regard was taken at CCEA meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Paris attack mastermind Abaaoud reported killed after 7-hour siege

Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the Belgian suspected to have masterminded the 1311 terror attacks, was killed during a seven-hour siege in a northern Paris suburb on Wednesday, the Washington Post said.Around 4.15am, French police stormed an apartment in Saint-Denis where Abaaoud was believed to have holed up with several other suspects. During the raid, a young woman detonated an explosive vest while another man was reported dead. The Post cited two unnamed intelligence officials, who said forensic experts had confirmed that the man was Abaaoud.

Cabinet clears `revised' Jan Lokpal Bill

Amid protests by the BJP in the House and Congress outside the Delhi chief minister’s residence over failure of the Delhi government to table the Jan Lokpal Bill, the cabinet cleared it hurriedly on Wednesday.It is not yet clear whether the Bill will be tabled in the assembly in the current winter session or not.The government claims this bill is a revised version of the 2014 Jan Lokpal Bill draft that emerged out of the Anna Hazare movement.

Doctors at a Delhi hospital have successfully removed cancerous pancreas from a 40-year-old woman without an open surgery . They used robotic arms to detach the diseased organ and drew it out through the vagina.It is a major achievement as laparoscopic surgery for the removal of pancreas--surgeons call it `tiger's territory' due to the complexities involved--is rarely done in India.Even abroad, only a few centres use the `Whipple procedure' or minimally invasive surgery for the removal of pancreatic cancer, and fewer still do it with robots. The successful operation at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is being seen as a breakthrough, therefore.


Union Cabinet gives nod to Tripartite Agreement of IBSA Fund for the Alleviation of Poverty and Hunger

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval for signing of the Tripartite Agreement on the IBSA Fund for the Alleviation of Poverty and Hunger. The IBSA fund for the Alleviation of Poverty and Hunger was set up in 2004 by three member countries India, Brazil and South Africa for South-South cooperation.

Union Cabinet approves setting up of NARF at Genome Valley in Hyderabad

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved setting up of a National Resource Facility for Bio-medical Research (NARF) at Genome Valley in Hyderabad, Telangana. NARF will be set up by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and the proposal in this regard was forwarded by the Department of Health Research of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
