Govt braces for opposition salvo in Parl on
`intolerance'
The winter session of Parliament is set for
a blustery opening with a special sitting to commemorate B R Ambedkar, a
leading architect of the Constitution. The government is keen on making it a
business-like session but the opposition will look to pin it down on issues
ranging from “growing intolerance“, politics over quotas and price rise of
pulses and vegetables to the farm crisis.Convened to mark
“Constitution Day“, the two-day discussion is likely to see BJP and allies and
the opposition having a go at each other with the Bihar poll result giving the
“secular“ camp some useful ammunition in taking on PM Modi and his government.
Mars to lose its largest moon, but gain a ring
Mars' largest moon, Phobos, is slowly falling towards the
planet and is likely to be shredded into pieces that will be strewn about the
red planet in a ring like those encircling Saturn and Jupiter, scientists,
including one of Indian-origin, say .The demise of Phobos will probably happen
in 20 to 40 million years, leaving a ring that will persist for anywhere from
one million to 100 million years. Postdoctoral fellow Benjamin Black and
graduate student Tushar Mittal estimate the cohesiveness of Phobos and conclude
that it is insufficient to resist the tidal forces that will pull it apart when
it gets closer to Mars.
SHORT CUTS
Scientists have designed a
new synthetic material that can fuse two surfaces underwater. The material
combines the key functionalities of interfacial mussel foot proteins, creating
a single, low-molecular-weight, onecomponent adhesive. The material was made
inspired by mussels' ability to cling to surfaces despite the pounding of waves
and wind. The adhesive can be used for basic repair of materials regularly
exposed to salty water, to biomedical and dental uses, as well as
nanofabrication.
