Acidity drug variant may harm kidneys

Long-term use of proton pump inhibitors, one of the most commonly prescribed group of antacids, may lead to chronic kidney disease, according to two studies published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology . The first, involving 10,482 participants, revealed PPI users were between 20% and 50% more likely to develop kidney diseases than non-PPI users, reports Durgesh Nandan Jha. Experts said the links could be a result of reduction in levels of magnesium in the blood due to PPIs but added there was no concrete proof of the same yet.

Collector says need clarity on green tax

NEW DELHI: As concerns over nonimplementation of the Supreme Court’s order on green tax grow, the municipal concessionaire has sought clarity on 11 issues from the South Delhi Municipal Corporation to start collecting the environment charge. Speaking to HT, Kishore Agrawal, a partner in SMYR Consortium, said that the company had so far not begun the tax collection because of a lack of clarity on the issue.
Among the issues Agrawal has highlighted are the monthly pass system, differentiation on the cargo and the exemption policy.

IITs asked to stop using disability photos in applications

NEW DELHI: The court of the chief commissioner of persons with disability (CCPD) has asked IITs to stop making physically-challenged applicants of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) JEE-Advanced fill forms and attach a picture of their disability as it amounts to discrimination. The CCPD wrote to IIT-Bombay on October 28.
Around 1.5 lakh students, who qualify the JEE Mains, are eligible to sit for the JEE Advance. Of the total seats, 3% is reserved for students with disability.

Court says no VAT for e-marketplaces

MUMBAI: In a ruling that will give relief to digital marketplaces such as Flipkart and Amazon, Kerala High Court late last week held that they are only facilitators to a transaction, and not sellers themselves, and are hence not liable to pay value added tax (VAT).
The court said that as the actual sellers have discharged their tax dues in full, the place of delivery holds no relevance, and as per Article 286 and Section 3 of the CST Act, tax is payable in the state where sales have occasioned.
